The Tipping Point: Why 95% Changes Everything
At the end of 2024 I wrote that the stakes in communications have never been higher and ventured that 2025 could be the year we redefine the future of communications. In my first post of this year I want to commit to doing just that.
I’m making the bold claim that we can change everything
Two years ago, the world was captivated by the debut of ChatGPT. Machines were suddenly talking in our own language, and the possibilities seemed endless. Yet here we are, and the massive economic shift many predicted hasn't materialized—at least not yet. The wonder has waned, and skepticism has crept in.
But I believe we're on the cusp of a transformative change, and it all comes down to a critical threshold: 95% accuracy.
The Paradox of Early Adoption
New technologies often impress with their potential but stumble in the real-world. Voice assistants are a prime example. When Apple launched Siri in 2011, it was a marvel—but also a mess. Early voice recognition systems struggled with accuracy, turning simple commands into comedic errors:
"Call Bob."
"Okay, calling Mom."
"No! Call Bob! Stop! … Yeah Hi Mum. Yes, ok, actually I was …”"
These misinterpretations weren't just inconveniences; they were barriers to adoption. It wasn't until 2015 that voice recognition error rates were reduced to around 5%, nearing human-level performance. Suddenly, voice assistants became not just novel but useful. By 2017, over 69 million Americans were using voice-activated assistants, embedding them into daily life.
AI's Current Conundrum
Artificial intelligence today is treading a similar path. In real business scenarios, AI tools typically boast first-attempt accuracies - meaning you get exactly what you need first time - ranging from 40% to 70%. With expertise and patience, they can be guided to the right result, but they still require careful human supervision. Managers see the allure but also the added complexity and cost—factors that stifle widespread enthusiasm.
The harsh truth is that AI hasn't yet delivered a tangible productivity boost in most use cases. It's intriguing but not indispensable.
But what happens when AI crosses that magical 95% accuracy threshold?
At 95% accuracy, AI shifts from being a burden to a compelling breakthrough. Error rates become acceptable, and the need for human oversight diminishes significantly. The technology transitions from interesting to irresistible. Businesses can't ignore the economics of scalable intelligence when the cost-benefit scales tip so dramatically.
Put another way, when 95% of communications missions can be completed without error or extensive supervision then the game has changed.
Our goal at InferenceCloud is to achieve this by reaching 95%+ this year. Here is how and why we are committing to this:
No single technological advancement operates in isolation. Consider the Internet: its widespread adoption took off in the early 2000s, yet it wasn't until more than a decade later that companies such as Uber and Airbnb began to disrupt entire industries. Why did we witness this sudden, massive but slightly delayed shift? Because once ubiquitous mobile internet access, coupled with the proliferation of affordable and user-friendly smartphones arrived (more than 60 years after the invention of the computer) we finally had all of the ingredients to fundamentally transform industries and deliver on the original technology promise.
We believe that in 2025 AI is at a similar inflection point. Here are the AI innovations we're weaving together to achieve the 95% goal:
Advanced Reasoning Models that can identify hypothesis, test and validate their work mimicking human analytical capabilities.
Agents that can gather essential context that substitutes the experience and subtle cues that enable careful human judgement.
User experience that helps structure human interaction and comprehend intent making it easier for users to work seamlessly with AI.
Rapidly falling cost of compute and open sourcing of architecture which is accelerating development in the field.
We're making bold claims, but only because we are seeing 100% accuracy in an increasing number of scenarios, and in interpreting analytics data and providing new levels of insight we are consistently exceeding human capabilities.
Generative applications are more challenging, but we already see 95%+ in many specific cases and with the convergence of the aforementioned elements, we are confident in reaching 95% accuracy across a broader range of scenarios this year. We know what needs to be done; now it's about execution.
In reality it could and may take us longer than a year to get there, but nonetheless we feel it is possible so this is what we are aiming for. If we don’t get there we will still be creating great outcomes in the majority of cases.
The road ahead
Let's reflect on what this means. Already, AI offers communicators opportunities to:
Understand Audiences Deeply with analytical insights into the precise needs of their audience and the competitive landscape.
Synthesize Vast Information assimilating critical elements from extensive data and talking points efficiently.
Create Tailored, High-Quality Output producing content that addresses core issues, customized for specific audiences.
Yet, for all these advancements, AI hasn't yet tackled the fundamental challenges that sit atop every leader’s agenda: resource constraints, responsiveness in a chaotic environment, and, most critically, trust. This is where breaching the 95% accuracy threshold is the tipping point where AI shifts from being a helpful tool to a game changer, enabling teams to not just react, but to proactively set their course.
Imagine liberating teams to focus on broader strategic visions because the daily grind of resource limitations is alleviated. Picture an environment where speed isn't a pressure point but a given, allowing organizations to outpace competitors and adapt in real-time. Envision trust being built through consistent, engaging content that elevates communications from a support function to a strategic powerhouse. This is not just incremental progress; it's a paradigm shift. When AI hits that 95% mark, it doesn't just change the way we work—it changes the very possibilities of what we can achieve. And that changes everything.
